The state of Colorado has set limits on gas-powered lawn and garden equipment which will go into effect starting in Summer 2025.
What Gas-Powered Products will be Banned?
Smaller gas-powered tools, such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, trimmers, snow blowers, and chainsaws.
Who Does This Pertain To?
Public entities such as local governments, colleges and universities, and school districts along the Front Range and all state-owned properties from Douglas County in the south to Larimer and Weld counties in the north – covering a nine-county region.
According to an outline of the plan provided by the air quality council, usage by commercial operators and homeowners’ associations would go into effect in 2026.
Who Will Not be Impacted by the Ban?
Commercial landscapers will not be affected by this ban. But the commission called for another rulemaking hearing to consider regulations for commercial lawn care companies no later than the end of 2025.
Private residents would not be banned from owning or using gas-powered equipment. But over time, as sales become limited, that equipment will likely be phased out.
Why is Colorado Implementing This?
The state has been strategizing on how to cut ground-level ozone levels in a nine-county region along the Front Range, as they want to put an end to pollution from gas-powered equipment.
Studies show that the ozone layer is a danger to human health closer to ground level, even though it guards against UV radiation high in the atmosphere. Inhaling the well-studied lung irritant — identifiable as smog and haze each summer — can worsen respiratory issues and shorten lives.
Gas-powered tools pump out large amounts of nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds, two ingredients that react in the atmosphere to form ozone on hot, sunny days. State models suggest the tools represent the third largest source of smog-forming pollution on the Front Range.
Is There a Penalty if You Use Gas-Powered Equipment?
Regulators will implement this with a soft enforcement strategy, meaning violators won’t face any fines or penalties for failing to shift to electric alternatives.
Where Can I Get Electric Powered Tools?
Here at Colorado Golf & Turf, we sell electric-powered snow blowers, mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, and more. One special thing we do is that unlike Home Depot, Lowes, and other hardware stores, we provide ongoing maintenance on these items if anything happens to them.
